The Association of Chinese American Physicians(ACAP) is excited to announce the successful conclusion of our 2023 career development conference held on March 26, 2023, at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. The conference was a resounding success, bringing together medical to learn, network, and grow at their respective stages of medical careers.
ACAP president Dr. Jin Li opened the conference with warm welcomes. She also mentioned ACAP career development series including this year’s mock interview to be held on Sept 24th, 2023 at Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel. This year’s modulators are Drs. Ziqiang Zhu, ACAP treasure, and Han Bao, ACAP board member, who are the co-chairs of this conference.
Our 2023 Career Development Conference covered topics as below:
1) Introduction to Residency Program Application & Interview by Karen Beekman, MD, FACP, Dr. Karen Beekman has been the program director for the Internal Medicine residency program at Flushing Hospital Medical Center since 2005. Here is YouTube link for her part. Link.
2) Surgery Residency Application by Jorge Con, MD FACS. He is the Program Director for the Department of Surgery Residency Program since 2017. Here is YouTube link for his part. Link
3) Hospital vs. Group Practice vs. Solo: What is the Best Fit for You? by Jing Xu, MD MS. She opened her own private practice in Elmhurst, NY and she is very proud to provide the best possible personalized primary care to the Chinese communities. Here is YouTube link for her part. Link.
4) Pros and Cons of Academic Medicine Practice by Huijuan Liao M.D., Ph.D. She currently practices endocrinology at Nassau University Medical Center and services as core faculty member of endocrinology fellowship training program at at Nassau University Medical Center. 6) Medical School Application by Kevin Tin, MD, MBA, FACP, After graduating in 2018, he worked in different private and multidisplinary groups and is now a partner at Newtown gastroenterology. Here is YouTube link for his part. Link
7)From Match Day to PGY-1 by Dr. Bo Pang. Dr. Bo Pang received her medical degree and post-graduate training from Shandong University. She joined Internal Medicine residency training program in St. Johns Episcopal Hospital in 2022.
8) Strategies for Approaching Surgical Pathology by Peizi Li, MD, MPH. Dr. Peizi Li received her medical degree from China. Then she went to Johns Hopkins to get her Master of Public Health degree before starting residency training in Pathology at Mount Sinai. Dr. Li is interested in pursuing GI and GU fellowship after residency.
9) How to Apply for Followership by Dr. Beishi Zheng, PGY3. Dr. Beishi Zheng obtained her medical degree at Wenzhou Medical University in 2013, accomplished her master’s degree in general surgery at Wenzhou Medical University in 2016. She is currently an Internal resident at Woodhull Medical Center in New York.
These topics cover necessary negotiation skills and career advancement strategies, and they will benefit medical graduate students and fellows.
One of the highlights of the conference was the networking opportunities it provided. Attendees had the chance to connect with peers and experts in their fields, share ideas, and forge valuable relationships that will help them advance their careers. The conference also received positive feedback from attendees who enjoyed the panel discussion sessions led by knowledgeable and engaging presenters.
